Castles & Manors of the Dukes of Mecklenburg - the countryside

From the 13th century until 1918 this country was a Duchy. Most of the land was owned by the Duke and a handful of noble families. Thus there were no free farmers but dependent peasants and laborers. An historical momentum that landmarked our history. The Dukes of Mecklenburg left behind many a palace, summer residence and hunting lodge. In addition to the ducal constructions, the influental noble families of the country built impressive manors and homes - some even more splendid than the Dukes' homes. Today nearly 2000 buildings are still preserved, of which many have undergone careful restoration in the past years and found a new use. A must see for all lovers of royal architecture and garden art.
