Hanseatic Cities - medieval splendor and modern pace

The mighty League of Hanseatic Citys with its nearly 200 members from all over Europe left behind many significant historic sights painting a vivid picture of architecture and social life in the 13th and 14th century. Especially along the eastern german Baltic coast imposing gothic churches and residences in carefully restored old towns serve as traces from this most prosperous period in our history. Some have even become UNESCO World Heritage sites, as they still today bear witness of life in the Middle Ages. Too bad you will have to choose between charming Luebeck, Wismar or Stralsund and exciting Hamburg.

Luebeck - Queen of the Hanseatic League
Luebeck was the most powerful merchants town of the medieval times. In 1987 the UNESCO honored Luebeck's efforts in the reconstruction of its old town by putting it on the World Cultural Heritage list. Pay a visit to the rebuilt gothic St. Mary's church, the medieval social institution Holy Spirit Hospital, the home of the guild of seamen "Schiffergesellschaft" and the landmark Holsten Gate. The city was/is home to three Nobel Prize winners - Thomas Mann, Willi Brandt and Guenther Grass. The Luebecker Marzipan almond candy is world famous since 1806.
